2026 Lexus NX Receives Major Upgrade, Challenges X3
The 2026 Lexus NX introduces substantial mechanical and safety upgrades for the compact luxury SUV, a model that competes directly with the BMW X3 and the Toyota RAV4.
Exterior and interior updates
The new model grows in length by 30mm to 4690mm, while the width, height, and wheelbase remain unchanged. Visually, the refresh features reshaped headlights and DRLs, a raised mesh grille, and black exterior mirror covers instead of chrome. LED tail-lights display a “Double L Signature” graphic.
Inside, the cabin adds a 14-inch navigation and multimedia screen alongside the existing 12.3-inch instrument cluster. Lexus incorporates a “Sensory Concierge” system that blends linear illumination, music, air conditioning, seat temperature, fragrance, and indirect lighting to create a calm atmosphere.
Engine and powertrain specs
Three variants will be offered: the 300h, 350h, and the flagship 450h+. The 300h uses a 2.0-litre front-wheel drive series-parallel hybrid system producing 145kW. The 350h offers a 2.5-litre hybrid in either front- or all-wheel drive configurations, ranging from 140kW to 180kW. The 450h+ plug-in hybrid delivers 215kW to 240kW, with an EV-only driving range of 140km in Japan.
The 450h+ model includes a new battery pack boasting an eight per cent higher output and a 30 per cent capacity increase. The battery cells shift from a longitudinal to a lateral orientation, which lowers the centre of gravity and improves body rigidity. This change, combined with reshaped engine blocks and reinforced connections, is claimed to reduce noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) while enhancing handling.
Driving trends and safety
Performance tuning for the new NX took place at the Toyota Technical Centre Shimoyama and the Nürburgring in Germany. The suspension uses ultra low-speed valves to balance handling response with ride comfort. The variable-ratio steering has been recalibrated for faster reaction to changing demands, and the accelerator response is now more linear. The steering wheel diameter shrinks by 10mm. F Sport grades receive 20-inch alloy wheels and 235/50 tyres.
Active safety systems have evolved to recognize objects more broadly and from a greater distance. The updated suite includes active cruise control, lane-change assist, pre-collision safety, driver monitoring, adaptive high-beam, blind-spot monitoring, and a panoramic overhead 3D view.
While the 2026 NX looks like a minor facelift, the structural changes suggest a more substantial shift in driving character. This mirrors the pattern seen in the automotive industry over the last decade, where manufacturers often disguise significant mechanical upgrades behind cosmetic revisions to maintain sales momentum. The NX’s improved rigidity and new battery technology hint that Lexus is targeting a more premium driving experience to better compete with rivals.
Lexus has not yet confirmed local pricing or final specifications. For reference, the current 350h 2WD Luxury starts at $71,830 before on-road costs, while the 450h+ F Sport tops out at $96,090.
Competition in the compact SUV segment is intense, with the BMW X3, Ioniq 5, and Macan offering compelling alternatives.
