BYD Mako ute revealed as Shark 6 sibling in Brazil
BYD has officially revealed a new ute in Brazil that is more lifestyle-oriented than the body-on-frame Shark 6. Dubbed the BYD Mako, this new vehicle is based on the Sealion 6 plug-in hybrid SUV, which utilizes a more passenger-oriented monocoque platform. This construction choice creates a direct rival to the Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz, while also positioning the model to challenge Toyota’s forthcoming Corolla Cross-based ute. Given this car was unveiled in Brazil, the target market for this new vehicle is Latin America, though its future availability in other regions remains unclear.
Engine and Suspension Details
According to previous reports, the Mako features a plug-in hybrid powertrain that marries together a 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine with an electric motor. The system delivers a combined output of 166kW and 400Nm of torque. It is understood that initial versions of the Mako will be offered solely in front-wheel drive configuration. However, industry analysts expect BYD to introduce an all-wheel drive variant at a later date to broaden its appeal.
The vehicle retains a multi-link rear suspension setup, a feature typically found in passenger cars rather than utility trucks. Despite this softer architecture, BYD claims the Mako has reinforced springs and shock absorbers to ensure adequate durability. This suspension design contrasts with the leaf-sprung setups found in traditional work trucks, prioritizing ride comfort over maximum payload capacity. At this stage, official figures regarding payload or towing capacity have not been detailed, a common occurrence for prototype vehicles.
The prototype nature of the Mako is evident on the outside, where the vehicle shares DNA with the Sealion 6 but features a slightly different grille setup and more aggressive roof rails. The rear section makes a sharp departure from the SUV, housing a large tub with a full-width LED lightbar for the tail-lights and BYD embossing on the tailgate. A soft tonneau cover is also present, enhancing the vehicle’s lifestyle utility. Inside, the layout mirrors the Sealion 6, featuring a 15.6-inch touchscreen multimedia system and a digital instrument cluster, though the prototype is currently obscured by black tape and monitoring equipment.

Design and Australian Prospects
The BYD Mako serves as the Chinese carmaker’s second ute offering, slotting underneath the top-selling Shark 6. This strategic move allows the company to target a broader customer base that may not require the heavy-duty capabilities of a body-on-frame truck. BYD Australia has not confirmed if the Mako will launch in the local market. A spokesperson stated that while the Shark 6 is “well accepted” in Australia and the lineup is “pretty strong” following the introduction of the Shark 6 Dynamic Cab Chassis and 2.0-litre Performance pickup, the company remains open to evaluating new opportunities.
Despite the lack of confirmation, BYD’s most senior executive recently promised a new model designed for Australian customers would launch during 2026. Group Vice President of BYD and General Manager of BYD Asia-Pacific Auto Sales Division Liu Xueliang noted the existence of a “special model” for the region. Chief Operating Officer Stephen Collins indicated the brand will “have more to say about that later in the year,” leaving open the possibility that the Mako or a different vehicle could fill a gap in the Australian lineup.
The larger BYD Shark 6 has been a runaway sales success in Australia, with a total of 10,709 examples sold so far in 2026. While the Shark 6 targets traditional truck buyers, the Mako’s unibody structure suggests a focus on versatility rather than heavy-duty work. This approach mirrors the strategies of other manufacturers expanding into the compact pickup segment, offering consumers a practical vehicle that balances daily driving comfort with utility features.
