The 2026 CarsGuide Car of the Year awards have named the best ute starting under $85K, pitting three dual‑cab contenders against each other for top honors.

Every judge on the panel placed the Ranger somewhere in their top three, though it fell short of the most first‑place votes. The model’s reputation for capability helped it stay in contention, especially with the addition of Super Duty and a plug‑in hybrid Stormtrak version.
Critics noted the Stormtrak’s electric performance felt a bit “cynical,” but some praised its effort. The consensus was that the Ranger still outranks most rivals in a range of categories, according to Managing Editor Tim Nicholson.

Its diesel pedigree remains a selling point, yet the hybrid option signals a shift toward electrified powertrains. The vehicle’s towing capacity and payload still meet traditional expectations, keeping it relevant for work and leisure.
Kia Tasman makes a bold entry in its first year.
Kia’s inaugural dual‑cab, the Tasman, broke onto the scene and immediately secured a spot on the CarsGuide podium. Judges highlighted the interior as “by far the best in the business,” despite mixed reactions to the exterior styling.
Byron Mathioudakis described the Tasman as a “workhorse” that “does the workhorse thing really well,” noting its spacious cabin and large cargo bed. A long warranty and a striking interior design helped the model stand out among established competitors.

BYD Shark 6 turns the segment on its head
The Shark 6 entered the market with a plug‑in hybrid petrol powertrain, forgoing the diesel engines that dominate Australian utes. It sold more than 18,000 units in 2025, ranking fourth in overall ute sales despite offering only a single body style.
Judge Tom White called the Shark 6’s ambition “a product that just turned the segment upside down.” Its appeal lies in style, technology, and a fresh approach that other manufacturers are now trying to emulate.
While it cannot tow 3.5 tonnes or carry a tonne, the model’s efficiency and lower running costs resonated with buyers looking for an alternative to traditional diesel workhorses.
