Volkswagen is overhauling its North American strategy with a sharp shift toward SUVs, pickups, and rugged-focused vehicles, a move described as the most sweeping restructuring in the company’s 89-year history. The automaker’s Future Plan 2030 will halve its global model lineup by 2035 and cut product complexity by 75% to concentrate on high-margin segments. For the United States, the plan calls for locally tailored models, including the possibility of finally adding a long-requested pickup, while less profitable offerings are slated for elimination.

The strategy repositions the VW brand with a stronger U.S. focus on rugged-focused vehicles and lifts Audi to serve as the premium SUV contender. A new Scout brand will sell directly to U.S. customers outside the traditional dealership network. A detailed North American rollout, outlining Scout’s role, is scheduled for review by the supervisory board on September 25. This review will determine the final allocation of resources across the region.

One immediate change is the phase-out of Seat, with sales expected to end by late 2029. Meanwhile, Cupra will remain a standalone brand, although its U.S. launch, originally set for 2030, has been postponed after talks with Penske Automotive Group began in late 2024. The restructuring also includes a reduction of 50,000 global jobs, a major reduction in planned investment, and the consolidation of engineering and manufacturing functions to boost efficiency.

Internal documents confirm that the plan relies on shared platforms and common software across all brands to lower costs. Although the firm will make a major reduction in planned investment, it has not disclosed specific dollar amounts. The overhaul extends beyond North America, with global model reductions and manufacturing streamlining.
