Jaguar will unveil the Type 01 tonight, marking the start of the British brand’s electric rebirth. The wraps will be removed from the car overnight in New York, and full coverage of the landmark EV will follow. The Type 01 is a luxury GT that has already shown its interior, which bears a strong resemblance to the earlier concept. It is divided into four sections by a central spine and features a minimalist approach to detailing. The rear lacks a traditional window; instead, a camera similar to the one used on the Polestar 4 provides visibility.

The Name and Pricing

The Type 01 takes its name from three significant elements. The “Type” prefix highlights its place in a succession of legendary predecessors stretching back to the C-Type racer that won at Le Mans in 1951 and continuing through the D-Type, E-Type, and F-Type. Each of those models was celebrated for blending an engaging drive with deep reserves of power, refinement, and composure. The “0” denotes its zero-emissions powertrain, while the “1” signals its status as the first Jaguar of a new era.

Prices are set to range from around £120,000 to more than £150,000 for high-spec, heavily personalised examples. This price window positions the vehicle between more mainstream premium marques such as BMW and Mercedes-Benz and top-drawer luxury contenders like Bentley and Aston Martin.

Launch Strategy and Future Plans

Speaking at the company’s investor day, JLR chief commercial officer Leonard Hoornik said, “We will launch it in a very, very special way.” The decision to pick an American location after the concept’s unveiling in Miami last year shows that JLR still believes the United States will be a key market for the car. The firm has previously reiterated its desire to keep Jaguar electric, despite a recent move to offer hybrid alternatives for the formerly EV-only EMA platform.

“The reason we’re saying that is because the kind of performance attributes we want Jaguar to perform against can be delivered only through an electric drivetrain,” explained JLR CEO PB Balaji during the same event.

It now looks as though JLR could take the Type 02 and Type 03 names into production, extending the naming scheme introduced with the current model.

Internal Codename, Production Timeline and Market Context

The high-performance saloon was originally referred to as Type 00, following the earlier concept, and carried the internal project name X900. Jaguar later confirmed the vehicle will be sold under the Type 01 badge, aligning the public name with its heritage-focused branding.

Jaguar plans to begin deliveries in the first half of 2027, ending an approximate 18-month pause in new model production that started after the F-Pace SUV was discontinued in December. The company chose an American launch venue to signal confidence in the U.S. market, even as the nation rolls back emissions rules and faces criticism of the brand’s revival strategy.
