JAC Motors unveils customisable work ute
Chinese automaker JAC Motors has released a customisable cab-chassis version of its T9 ute in Australia, aiming at tradies and fleet buyers who need vehicles tailored for specific work tasks.
A blank canvas for tradies
The cab-chassis variant arrives as JAC notes that around 60% of its customers modify their utes. The model serves as a base for custom trays or service bodies, avoiding the limitations of a factory-fitted tub.
At $38,990 before on-road costs, the T9 Tradepro undercuts rivals like the Ford Ranger XL ($49,230), Isuzu D-Max SX ($50,700), and Toyota HiLux Workmate ($52,490). The price does not include the tray, which buyers must source separately.
The model uses the same 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine, eight-speed automatic transmission, and part-time dual-range 4×4 system as the standard T9 ute. It maintains the 3,110mm wheelbase, with 27-degree approach and 23-degree departure angles, 210mm of ground clearance, and a 650mm wading depth.
Built for work, not just looks
The Tradepro includes 18-inch steel wheels, LED lighting, rear parking sensors, and a reversing camera. Inside, it offers keyless entry, push-button start, durable seat fabrics, and a wipe-clean vinyl floor. The 10.4-inch touchscreen supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, though only through wired connections.
The cabin balances ruggedness with refinement, featuring soft-touch surfaces, chrome accents, and red stitching. Rear seats provide ample legroom, though shoulder space is tight for three adults. Storage options include door bins, a dash drawer, and a centre console with a cooling vent.
JAC showcased the model’s adaptability with a service body featuring an aluminium powder-coated tray, internal drawer system, and a roller ladder roof rack. The setup targets tradies, though the tray lacks internal load anchorage points.

The ride remains firm yet comfortable, with five-leaf rear springs handling heavy loads without bottoming out. During testing, the model stayed stable with a 980kg payload, well under its 3,100kg gross vehicle mass.
Safety and ownership
Safety features include a five-star ANCAP rating, autonomous emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control. The model also provides ISOFIX child-restraint anchorages and top tethers for younger passengers.
JAC provides a seven-year/unlimited kilometre warranty and seven years of roadside assistance. Servicing is required every 12 months or 15,000km, with capped pricing for the first seven services totaling $3,340. The company has over 50 dealerships across Australia, including regional locations.
The cab-chassis segment has been controlled by established brands, but JAC’s pricing and customisation focus could introduce competition. Success may hinge on how easily aftermarket suppliers adapt to the platform rather than the vehicle itself.
For buyers prioritising flexibility, the T9 Tradepro presents a strong option. Its reception will test whether Australia’s ute market is open to new players.
Ford’s compact Maverick also targets practical buyers, though with a different approach to power and size.
