Mercedes-Benz GLA-CLASS Revealed for 2028

The 2028 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class marks the automaker’s return to the small-vehicle market with a model built on the new Mercedes Modular Architecture (MMA). This platform is engineered specifically for compact and entry-level vehicles, a strategic pivot aimed at reclaiming market share lost to rivals like BMW. While the GLA may not match the sales volume of Mercedes’ large SUVs in the United States, the company views it as a critical entry point for new customers. Globally, the model is expected to be a high-volume seller, particularly in Europe and China where electric vehicle adoption is already strong.

Mercedes-Benz Group chairman Ola Källenius noted that the long-range battery is sufficient for 95 percent of daily driving needs. The automaker anticipates that European buyers will prefer the electric variant, while North American sales will lean toward the hybrid option. Manufacturing facilities, such as the plant in Hungary, possess the flexibility required to produce both powertrain types.

The new GLA adopts an upright front end and a sloped roofline, giving it a longer wheelbase and a wider stance than its predecessor. It sits 0.8 inches lower and measures nearly two and a half inches longer overall. This design language prioritizes visual distinctiveness over technical similarity between trims. The electric version features a signature front face with optional illuminated bars, a chrome frame, and a large illuminated star. The rear features 608 backlights and 158 micro-LEDs that animate when the driver approaches or leaves. The hybrid model opts for a more subdued design similar to the GLE and GLS.

Mercedes offers four trim levels: Style, Progressive, AMG Line, and the new AMG Line Plus with Night package. This top-tier option introduces a distinct front fascia with larger air intakes, gloss black trim, sport seats, and 20-inch wheels. The Night Edition includes unique 20-inch wheels, Cosmos Black Magno paint, and specialized upholstery.

Buyers will choose between two all-electric models. The base GLA250+ Electric produces 268 horsepower and is rear-wheel drive. The top-tier GLA350 4Matic Electric generates 349 horsepower and can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds. Both vehicles utilize an 85 kWh usable capacity NMC lithium-ion battery pack. The architecture supports 800-volt charging, allowing for approximately 120 miles of range in just ten minutes. The system uses NACS for DC fast charging and includes a voltage converter to work with 400-volt stations. The company projects a range of about 350 miles.

It is reasonable to expect that the GLA’s success in North America will depend heavily on the hybrid’s ability to offer a familiar driving experience without the range anxiety that often discourages buyers from switching to fully electric vehicles. If the hybrid delivers the fuel efficiency expected of a small car while maintaining the brand’s interior quality, it could serve as a steady volume seller in a market that remains skeptical about full electrification. European regulators have already signaled strict scrutiny regarding Mercedes’ deep ties to China, which could impact the availability of the GLA in the region. Meanwhile, the platform’s modular design allows for high-volume production, ensuring that the GLA can meet demand without excessive cost increases. The automaker’s decision to use a specific battery chemistry suggests a focus on longevity and safety, which could be a selling point for environmentally conscious consumers. This approach contrasts with other manufacturers that prioritize rapid scaling over long-term component stability.
